Sylvester James, born on September 6, 1947, was a soul and disco music singer who was openly gay. His best known songs are “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)”, “Dance (Disco Heat)” and “Do You Wanna Funk”. He was at the peak of his career from 1978 to 1984. He was born in Los Angeles, California and moved to San Francisco in 1967, where he joined a drag and music show. He was also in demand as a backing singer for other artists, including Aretha Franklin (Who’s Zoomin’ Who?). He died on December 16, 1988 of complications from AIDS in San Francisco at the age of 41. His music is still highly regarded.
